A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

The College was founded during the year 1955- 56 and housed in the Govt. High School, Komarapalayam. IT was affiliated to the University of Madras.  Originally, it offered B.Ed., Degree course and the Pandit Training Course.  The College started functioning in the present buildings situated in an area of about 19 acres from 05.03.1972 onwards.  As per the order of Director of Collegiate Education, Chennai (R.C.No. 638133/Q2/2013 dated 09.01.2014) 9.32 Acres were given and Government College of Education, Komarapalayam it having 9.23 Acres.  The M.Ed., Degree Course was started as an evening course during the year 1974 – 1975.  In October 1976 the Pandit Training Course was wound up and in the year 1982 – 1983 M.Ed., Degree Course was converted into a full-time course.  The College became a co-education institution during the year 1990 – 1991.

A permanent hostel building for men students was opened in 1986 – 87 and for women students during the year 1993 – 1994.  The sanctioned strength for B.Ed. increased to 100 with an additional strength of 20 seats sanctioned exclusively to accommodate B.Lit. candidates during the academic year 1998 – 1999.  The college is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University, Chennai from 2008 – 2009. This College is accredited by NAAC twice with ‘B’ grade (2005-2010)(2012-2018).  And also received RUSA financial Assistance from MHRD.  2 corers was allotted out of which70 lakh for New Construction of Seminar Hall to accommodate 250 persons.  Rupees 70 lakhs allotted for Renovation and Upgradation of existing Academic Building.

Institution’s Purpose

  • To produce skilled, dedicated and sincere teachers at secondary and higher secondary levels.
  • To identify problems in the field of education and to find solutions for them by promoting research.

Government College of Education, Komarapalayam strives to achieve these goals by:

  • Making the students academically competent teachers armed with both knowledge and teaching skills.

  • Developing desirable traits and full responsibilities as a teacher inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom in the larger context of the society.
  • Making them good teachers to face the challenges of large classes, mixed ability groups, students with special needs, gifted children and other handicapped children.
  • Updating the methods of teaching the school curriculum by using technology.
  • Revising the syllabus keeping in view the changing global needs and the knowledge explosion.
  • Building leadership qualities and organizing skills of future teachers by making them organize extra-curricular activities on their own.
  • Facilitating the expression of their creativity by helping them to make wealth from waste and to prepare improvised teaching aids.
  • Inculcating good values that go to make them exemplary teachers in future.
  • Creating opportunities for school and college teachers to take up research programmes, to experiment with new methods and ideas, and to study the existing problems in the field of education.
  • Generating employment opportunities for trainees by inviting schools in and around Coimbatore to conduct campus interviews.
  • Creating awareness about the depletion of natural resources and the dangers facing ecology so that the trainee-teachers become responsible citizens.
  • Developing the personality of the trainees.
  • Training the students to give guidance and counseling to school students.
